On January 16, 1919, Congress passed the 18th Amendment stating that, “After one year from the ratification of this article, the manufacture, sale or transportation of intoxicating liquors within, the importation thereof into or the exploration thereof from the United States and all territory subject to the jurisdiction thereof for beverage purposed is hereby prohibited.” This amendment was passed in the hope that drunkenness, crime, mental illness and poverty would also end with its passing. This time in history is known as Prohibition.

Prohibition seemed to only make matters worse. Several unforeseen problems arose during this time: the creation of repeal organizations, the rise of civil delinquency and the illegal consumption of alcohol among others. So on December 5, 1933, Utah, the final state needed for a three quarters majority vote, Prohibition was repeal with the passing of the 21st Amendment. The 21st Amendment reads, “The eighteenth article of amendment to the Constitution of the United States is hereby repealed.”

“We celebrate Repeal Day because December 5th marks a return to the rich traditions of craft fermentation and distillation, the legitimacy of the American bartender as a contributor to the culinary arts and the responsible enjoyment of alcohol as a sacred social custom.”
